[bigger image] British men are too shy. But they should feel free to be sensitive!
teacher: alright, kids, this is a hard one….can anyone here spell ‘emma watson’?
student: *raises hand* ooh, I can! H-Y-P-O-C-R-I-T-E
I seriously don’t think she thought very hard about her speech or what she was actually saying.
My thoughts on this is, I think celebs know exactly what they’re doing when they come out as being that stereotypical feminist. I seriously think they get paid (or other perks) to be feminists. I know I sound like a batshit conspiracy theorist but it’s really telling when world famous actors can research roles — going to war vet hospitals, talking to cancer patients, reading every issue of a specific character’s comic book known to man, but they can’t google simple fucking facts on how the wage gap is a myth and that feminism has been fucking up lately. Famous multimillionaires are that willingly uninformed? I mean damn.
Yeah, but then you look at how they’re attacked and treated when they aren’t willing to take on the label or when they say something against the grain and it’s almost like a survival technique now. To keep from being blacklisted by fans and media, they have to identify as feminists and never question it or at least never ever speak on the topic if they don’t identify as one. It honestly reminds me of McCarthy era Hollywood…
You’re right, there are definitely ones that just say they’re feminists to keep people off their backs, but also a lot that just do it for brownie points
I don’t think Emma is one of those though. I don’t know, I just don’t get that feeling from her speech or listening to her. I feel she’s more naive than anything. Of course, naivete can be harmful.
She does sound more naïve than intentionally harmful. She probably doesn’t know what she’s saying can hurt men, and she most likely is being used as a figurehead for #HeForShe :/
Wait. I thought HeForShe was her idea.
Not sure. Whoever’s idea it is, I think the UN is using her as a figurehead because, well, rich famous woman.
They chose her because she’s Emma Watson, she’ll get people interested because she’s Emma Watson.
Jesus, calm your tits. Saying that men should be free to be shy, sensitive or unassertive (and they should) does not mean she or anyone is obligated to be attracted to that. The rhetoric behind this is pretty worrisome — she says she doesn’t find something attractive, therefore it must be wrong and if she says it’s fine, she’s a hypocrite? Pick your battles, people.
She’s allowed to not be attracted to shy men, that’s preference, but to say all British men are shy is just stereotyping. That’s what people should be arguing.
